Tennis Elbow

What is Tennis Elbow?

Tennis Elbow or Lateral Epicondylitis is caused when the elbow tendons that are involved in bending your arm backwards, away from the palm, are torn or inflamed causing pain in the outer part of the elbow. 

Symptoms

  • Pain or burning sensation along the forearm and elbow
    • the pain may spread down to the wrist if its ignored for a long period of time
  • Pain may be felt when arm is placed palm-down on a table or when the arm is raised against resistance through lifting or gripping small objects such as a coffee cup
  • Overall weaker grip

When to see a doctor

Consider seeing a doctor if rest, ice, and pain relievers do not ease the pain, if the pain impacts daily activities, or if you notice a visual bulge or lump on your arm.

Prevention

  • maintain a neutral wrist, don't excessively extend it when you begin your backswing
  • Keep your grip pressure firm, but not overly tight, about a 4-5/10
  • make sure your grips are fitted to your golf style
  • Stop activity immediately if it produces symptoms
  • Strengthening and stretching exercises
    • Wrist extension stretch 
    • Isometric wrist extension 
    • Sock/ball squeezes
    • Resisted wrist turns
    • Towel twists

Treatment

  • Rest
  • Ice packs
  • Compression bandage around the elbow
  • Use NSAIDS such as ibuprofen if needed for pain or swelling
