Facial Trauma

What is facial trauma?

The term facial fracture refers to broken bones in your face. This is normally due to facial trauma. Your facial bones are much thinner than most of the other bones in your body, making them more vulnerable for fractures. Dental damage can result from trauma to the teeth and mouth area.

Symptoms

Bruising and swelling

  • Pain or tenderness
  • Facial numbness
  • Broken nose
    • Difficulty breathing through the nose
    • Nosebleeds
  • Broken eye sockets
    • Blurred vision
    • Double vision
    • Bulging eye balls
    • Sunken eye balls
    • Difficulty moving eyes
  • Broken jaw
    • Drooling
    • Difficulty chewing or speaking
    • Pain when opening your mouth
    • Loosened or broken teeth
  • Dental trauma
    • Toothache
    • Discolored tooth
    • Mouth pain
    • Swelling
    • Bleeding from your mouth
    • Change in bite
    • Loose tooth
    • Difficulty moving jaw or opening mouth
    • If your tooth falls out, store it in Vitamin D fortified milk and bring it with you to the hospital (as opposed to storing it dry or in water)

When to see a doctor

You should see a doctor whenever any facial trauma is experienced, even if it is minor. You should also call a dentist immediately if you experience trauma to your teeth.

Prevention

  • Ensure your mask is properly fitted
  • Keep mouth guards and masks on at all times when playing

Recovery

  • NSAIDs (e.g. ibuprofen) for pain relief and swelling
  • In most cases a healthcare provider will need to reset/realign facial bones in order to ensure proper healing
    • In some cases, this will require surgery
  • In dental trauma, fillings, dental bonding, root canal therapy, replantation/restabilization, or tooth extraction or replacement may be needed.
