Knee Meniscus Tear

What is a meniscal tear?

The meniscus is a C-shaped piece of cartilage that cushions the space between your thigh bone (femur) and shin bone (tibia). A sudden twist of the knee as it is carrying weight can cause of tear in the meniscus. 

Symptoms

It may take 24 hours or more before pain and swelling begin, especially in the case of of small tear. Some symptoms may be:

  • A popping sensation 
  • Swelling or stiffness
  • Pain (increased when knee is twisted or rotated)
  • Difficulty fully extending the knee
  • A locked feeling in your knee when trying to move it 
  • The feeling of your knee giving out or losing stability

When to see a doctor?

Consider seeing a doctor when your knee is painful or swollen or if you can't move your knee/bear weight on your knee to the extent that you normally can. 

Prevention

  • Wear a knee brace if you have unstable or weak knees
  • Wear appropriate shoes 
  • Stretch and strengthen knee before/after games and practices
    • Hamstring Curls (with or without resistance band)
    • Lying straight leg raises
    • Clamshell exercise
    • Lunges
    • Squats

Recovery

  • Some meniscal tears are capable of healing without surgery in some cases, depending on the severity
  • RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation
