Lisfranc Injuries

What are Lisfranc injuries?

A Lisfranc injury involves damage to the joint complex in the midfoot, specifically where the metatarsals meets the tarsal bones. The injury can include ligament sprains, fractures, or dislocations. Lisfranc ligaments help stabilize the joint complex, therefore injuries to these ligaments can cause the midfoot to become unstable.

Symptoms

  • Pain in the middle/arch region of the foot, especially when bearing weight
  • Swelling and tenderness over midfoot
  • Bruising on the top and/or bottom surface of the foot
  • Difficulty or inability to walk

When to see a doctor

Consider seeing a doctor when you can't put weight on the foot or walk or when you experience any of the above symptoms that do not improve with icing and a few days of rest

Prevention

  • Use cleats with good midfoot and arch support
  • Cortical studs normally provide more rotational freedom, reducing the risk of having a planted foot with motion change
  • Strengthen inner foot muscles and ankle stabilizers
    • Sitting plantar fascia stretch
    • Calf stretch
    • Towel scrunch
    • Single leg circle taps
    • Single leg floor touches

Recovery

  • RICE (rest, ice, compress, elevate)
  • NSAIDs (e.g. ibuprofen) for pain and swelling
  • Surgery may be needed if the joint is unstable
