Calf Strain

What is a calf strain?

A calf strain occurs when a muscle in the back of the lower leg is over-stretched or torn. Severity can vary depending on how much the muscle was stretched, from a small overstretch (mild) to a severe one (full tear).

Symptoms

  • Sudden pain in the calf, usually during activity
  • Sudden pain on bending the knee or when flexing the ankle/pointing toes
  • Bruising/swelling in the calf area
  • Difficulty standing or tensing calf muscle in any way
  • Snapping and/or popping sensation at time of injury

When to see a doctor

Consider seeing a doctor if the injury affects your ability to walk, bear weight, or move your knee/ankle as you normally would, if you have severe pain in your calf, or if you notice significant swelling in your lower leg, foot, or ankle.

Prevention

  • Wear well-fitted cleats with adequate arch and heel support
  • Ensure your shin guards don't restrict calf movement
  • Warm up calf muscles before drills or games by lightly jogging
  • Stretch or strengthen calf muscles:
    • Standing calf stretch
    • Wall calf stretch
    • Downward dog yoga stretch
    • Foam roller against the calf muscles

Recovery

  • Don't play through the pain
  • RICE (rest, ice, compress, elevate)
  • NSAIDs (e.g. ibuprofen) for pain relief
  • Physical therapy
  • Soft cast/boot if needed to immobilize leg movement
