Concussion

What is a concussion?

A concussion is a brain injury that affects brain function. The effects are normally short term and caused by impact to the head or part of the body that is associated with a change function. However, in some cases, concussive symptoms can lead to long-term symptoms.

Symptoms

  • Headache
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Fatigue or drowsiness
  • Blurry vision
  • Confusion or grogginess
  • Amnesia surrounding the event that caused the injury
  • Dizziness or "seeing stars"

Some symptoms occur right away, but other times, symptoms may not appear until days later.

When to see a doctor

Head injuries are serious. You should go to see a doctor within 1-2 days of experiencing a head injury, especially if you notice:

  • Repeated vomiting or nausea
  • Loss of consciousness that lasted >30 seconds
  • A gradually worsening headache
  • Fluid/blood drainage from the nose or ears
  • Vision or eye changes (pupil enlargement or unequal)
  • Constant ringing in the ears
  • Changes in behavior
  • Weakness in arms/legs
  • Confusion or disorientation (not recognizing certain people or places)
  • Slurred speech or any other speech changes
  • Noticeable changes to mental function
  • Changes in coordination (increased stumbling/clumsiness)
  • Seizures or convulsions
  • Dizziness that doesn't go away or constantly comes back
  • Large head bumps or bruising around the eyes or ears

Prevention

  • Ensure that you wear a helmet that is fitted properly to your head
  • Focus on hitting opponents with your shoulder rather than head
  • Avoid helmet-to-helmet contact

Recovery

  • NEVER return to game or practice after experiencing a traumatic head injury or while you have a concussion.
  • Don't participate in activities that require significant concentration (video games, TV, doing schoolwork, reading, or using electronic devices)
  • Avoid bright lights, loud noises, and stimulating environments
  • Don't participate in physical exertion or vigorous movements
  • Gradually increase daily activities after a period of rest, don't rush back into prior routines and activities
