Labral Tissue Problems

What are Labral Tissue Problems?

Labral tissue problems occur when the cartilage that stabilizes the hip joint is pinched, strained, or damaged. The labrum works like a rubber seal that cushions the hip and keeps the ball of the thigh bone securely in the socket. When the tissue is irritated or injured, it can lead to pain, clicking, or limited hip mobility.

Symptoms

  • Many labral tears are symptomless
  • Pain in the hip or groin–made worse by long periods of standing, walking, or sitting
  • A locking, clicking, or catching sensation in the hip joint
  • Stiffness or limited range of motion in the hip joint

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if symptoms worsen or if they are consistent for an elongated period of time, such as six weeks.

Prevention

  • Avoid over-rotating the hips in the downswing
  • Keep your leading foot flared slightly outward, about 10-30 degrees
  • Stretch the muscles around the hip
    • Kneeling hip flexor stretch
    • Horizontal squat stretch
    • Standing inner thigh stretch
    • Seated butterfly stretch
  • Standing hip abductions

Treatment

  • Ice can be used for pain or swelling
  • Heat can be used for stiffness
  • Use NSAIDs such as ibuprofen for pain or inflammation
  • Take a break from intensely training, however continue participating in gentle mobility such as walking or cycling
