Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

What is carpal tunnel syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition occurs when the median nerve is compressed as it travels through the carpal tunnel in the wrist. The carpal tunnel is a small passageway for the median nerve and a number of tendons in the arm and hand. When these tendons become overworked and inflamed, the carpal tunnel space becomes even narrower, causing compression of the median nerve and symptoms

Symptoms

  • Tingling and numbness in the hand/fingers, usually the thumb, index finger, middle, and ring fingers
  • The tingling sensation may travel up the wrist and arm
  • Weakness in the hand
  • Wasting of the thenar eminence (fleshy mound at the base of the thumb)

When to see a doctor

Consider seeing a doctor if symptoms interfere with typical activities and sleep patterns. Permanent nerve and muscle damage may occur without proper treatment

Prevention

  • Take breaks when training and be mindful of your limits
  • Loosen your grip on the racket
  • Use cold packs to reduce swelling
  • Stretch and warm up before and after playing
  • Prayer stretch
  • Wrist flexor stretch
  • Wrist extensor stretch
  • Wrist rotations
  • Tendon glides

Recovery

  • Cold packs to reduce swelling
  • Use a wrist splint
  • In some cases, surgery is required
