Labral Tear

What is a labral tear?

The labrum is a ring of cartilage that surrounds the shoulder joint socket and provides stabilization for the joint. It serves as the anchor point for several ligaments and the biceps tendon. A labral tear is an injury to the labrum, which causes pain and instability.

Symptoms

  • Shoulder pain
  • Instability
  • Feeling or hearing a popping sensation in the shoulder
  • Limited range of motion
  • Shoulder stiffness

When to see a doctor

  • Immediately seek medical attention if you have signs or symptoms of a shoulder dislocation
  • Seek out a doctor if symptoms are persistent and impact daily activities

Prevention

  • Use correct form when completing overhand serves
  • Don't drow your elbow behind your body when serving
  • Use your legs and core to generate power, not just the shoulder
  • Strengthen muscles in upper back and around the shoulder
    • Scapular Squeezes
    • Wall Angles
    • Wall Slides
    • Cross Body Shoulder Stretch
    • Doorway Chest Stretch

Recovery

  • Use NSAIDs and Ice to reduce inflammation and pain
  • Sleep with a pillow under the injured arm to keep the joint neutral
  • Avoid playing until the muscles surrounding the labrum are strengthened post-injury by slowly beginning to do the stretches listed
