Patellar Tendonitis (Jumper's Knee)

What is patellar tendonitis?

Patellar tendonitis is inflammation of the tendon that joins the kneecap (patella) to the tibia (shin bone).

Symptoms

  • Pain felt in the area between the kneecap and shin bone.
  • At first, pain is only felt when jumping or at the beginning of an activity. With time, pain can worsen and become constant

When to see a doctor

Consider seeing a doctor if the pain keeps you from performing your daily activities, if you notice significant swelling or redness near the knee joint, or if pain continues or gets worse over an extended period of time

Prevention

  • Strapping/taping along the leg
  • Applying ice after performing an activity if you notice swelling or pain
  • Avoid activities that cause or worsen knee pain
  • Wear appropriate shoes when exercising
  • Strengthen and stretch muscles around the knee before and after activity
  • Hamstring stretch
  • Kneeling hip flexor stretch
  • Squats
  • Strep ups

Recovery

  • Rest
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers (e.g. ibuprofen)
